Centervue Maia represents the latest advance in confocal microperimetry. An eye tracker allows real-time, accurate, reimbursement of eye movements. MAIA is highly automated, very easy to use, non-mydriatic and combines the best aspects of its predecessors.

Similarly to Standard Automated Perimetry (SAP), MAIA measures the mild sensitivity of the retina by projecting Goldmann III stimulation over different retinal locations within the field of view. Retinal images, made by SLO technologies, are processed using an eye tracker to calculate and compensate eye shifts (fixation losses) happening during visual field dimension, in both physiological and pathological conditions. Fixation evaluation is the second, primary, outcome of this MAIA eye.

Centervue Maia performs different kinds of microperimetry tests with supra and full-threshold approaches, and follow up an experiment to monitor operational progression. Each exam provides a measure of retinal sensitivity and fixation evaluation (stability and standing of the Preferred Retinal Locus).

Centervue Maia microperimeter technology combines three distinct techniques in the analysis of the retinal function: a) Retinal Imaging, b) Analysis of retinal sensitivity and c) Evaluation of fixation capacities. MAIA is employed as a diagnostic device to help in the detection and control of diseases affecting the macula, for example, but not limited to, macular degenerations.

Based on CenterVue, the MAIA Microperimeter is utilized to evaluate a patient's visual function and fixation stability. Fixation Coaching can subsequently use if the area of fixation within a patient's mind is inadequate to provide stable vision. The Fixation Training uses a projected stimulus that's moved to a different place while an auditory tone signals to the patient that stable vision achieve. By repeated response and test, the individual can learn how to reposition their eye to attain enhanced fixation stability, finally helping them recover the capacity to read, recognize faces and achieve an overall improved quality of life.

The MAIA is the ideal tool for detecting and monitoring retinal functional alterations and observing the effectiveness of therapy, over time. It sports a confocal line Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope (SLO), real-time eye-tracker and 4-2 threshold fundus perimetry (microperimetry).
The system's unique SLO technology captures clear and detailed confocal images of the retina onto a scale so accurate that structures commonly missed by fundus cameras, for example, macular drusen and holes, are visualized.

Centervue Maia is also armed with threshold sensitivity analysis applications, enabling it to correctly and precisely measure and track functional changes when compared with an age-related database of 'normal' benchmark values.
Simple and quick to use, patients could be tested in less than 3 minutes per eye using the 'fast test' mode. The 25MHz eye-tracking technology automatically identifies the eye and stability of their fixation. Even if the patient goes, the results will still be accurate.

How Centervue Maia Works

    • MAIA collects both anatomical and functional data. MAIA subjectively analyzes macula photoreceptor sensitivity and patient fixation stability in combination with a linear SLO tracked fundus image.
    • Live imaging of the central retina over a 36° field of view, acquired under IR illumination at 850nm, using a confocal imaging system.
    • Eye-tracking, recorded at 25 Hz, throughout the test ensures consistent patient fixation. Subjective measurements of differential light sensitivity at multiple locations in the macula are obtained as in fundus perimetry.

    Tests

    1. FAST: A supra-threshold test, used to screen patients with no known disease, measuring 2 levels of sensitivity (27 dB and 25 dB). Values are color coded in comparison with normative intervals. Typical duration (37 stimuli) is 2 min per eye.
    2. SCOTOMA FINDER: A supra-threshold test, used to examine highly pathologic patients, measuring one level of sensitivity (0 dB). Typical duration (37 stimuli) is about 2 min per eye.
    3. 4 LEVELS FIXED: A supra-threshold test, used to examine pathologic patients, measuring 4 levels of sensitivity (0 dB, 5 dB, 15 dB, 25 dB). Typical duration (37 stimuli) is about 3 min per eye.
    4. FULL THRESHOLDl 4-2: Test used to examine retinal sensitivity in detail. The average threshold (dB) is color coded in comparison with normative intervals. Typical duration (37 stimuli) is less than 6 min per eye.
    5. FOLLOW-UP: Measures exactly the same locations with the same projection strategy as in the baseline test, independent of fixation shifts.
