Introduction to Tonometer

A tonometer is a device in which the pressure in the eyes, known as intraocular pressure, is measured. It is used to test whether a person suffers from glaucoma, and to monitor the treatment of glaucoma. Glaucoma is an ophthalmic disease. High pressure from the extra fluid in the front part of the eyes causes damage to the optic nerves. This result may cause blindness if left untreated. The tonometer device measures the firmness of the tone of the surface of the eyes. Tonometer measures the pressure in your eye

How it works

After anesthetizing your eyes with anesthetic eye drops, your doctor places the device against the surface of the eyes.

What the results mean

The results are average if they range from 12 to 22 mmHg. You are more likely to have glaucoma if your pressure is above 20 mmHg.

Some of the patients maybe have intraocular pressure, but their optic nerves look normal. In this case, they have a condition called “ocular hypertension.” It may develop into glaucoma later.

What the eye pressure

With high eye pressure, everyone can be affected blindness and glaucoma. But, don't worry because most people with affected glaucoma will not lose their sight. Checked an eye exam regularly patient can monitor ocular health and visual function.
